Institutionalising Patents in Nineteenth-Century Spain

This book examines the development of the Spanish patent system in the years 1826 to 1902, providing a fundamental reassessment of its evolution in an international context. The Spanish case is particularly interesting because of this country’s location on the so-called European periphery and also because of the centrality of its colonial dimension. Pretel gauges the political regulation and organisation of the system, showing how it was established and how it evolved following international patterns of technological globalisation and the emergence of the ‘international patent system’ during the late nineteenth century. Crucially, he highlights the construction and evolution of the pat...

On the History of Economic Thought is introduced by an essay in intellectual autobiography outlining the development of Coats key ideas and the distinctive elements of his approach. Two themes in particular emerge. The first is the difference between British and American economics, both in content and in the practice of the profession. This is an important element in all areas of his research. The second theme is in the interrelationships between economic ideas, events (or conditions) and policy issues. The book concludes by offering an assessment of the current state of the discipline indicating the advantages an historian of economics can offer as a commentator on recent developments.

The End of Anglo-America

The End of Anglo-America

This collection of essays examines the phenomenon of the gradually evolving cultural differences which took place between America and Britain after the American revolution. A culture of individualism began to emerge in contrast with elitism, leading to suspicion of government and emerging personal ambitions, particularly with regard to one's children. However, cultural changes emerged at a different pace in different parts of the country. One author argues that Britain and America continued as members of a single political family which, in turn, belonged to a wider European community. Another suggests that a clear but selective emancipation from the British political culture took place and that a development of distinctly American institutions and practices emerged. Yet another believes that in the United States there was less criticism of business success and less possibility of the generations that succeeded business success being seduced by gentrification.

Illustrations of Political Economy

Published in 1832, Illustrations of Political Economy established Harriet Martineau as both a successful and controversial author and a pioneer of nineteenth-century “social problem” writing. This widely read series of didactic stories popularized political economy, making it accessible to audiences by vividly dramatizing issues such as overpopulation and labour strikes. Illustrations of Political Economy marks a pivotal moment in which literature and politics came together, laying the foundation for the realism and social commentary of later Victorian novels. This Broadview edition contains a critical introduction and a rich selection of historical documents, including contemporary reviews of Illustrations and writings on population growth, factory conditions, and working-class life.
